The AnimalPyschAromatica approach is based on the scientific theory of ‘zoopharmacognosy’ which translates as an animals innate ability to select medicinal plants, flowers and herbs. Animals in the wild naturally self-medicate as they often do not have access to veterinary care. Domestic animals still have the ability to self-medicate if given the opportunity to do so. It is important to give our pets the ability to use their natural ability to self-select to support their health and wellbeing alongside veterinary care. In my sessions, I safely offer a range of dog-appropriate essential oils, hydrosols, and plant extracts and allow your dog to guide the process through their natural responses. They are never forced to interact with anything — choice is always central.
This approach can be particularly supportive for rescue and rehomed dogs who may be navigating:
Anxiety or hypervigilance
Trauma-related behaviours
Digestive imbalances
Skin issues
Difficulty settling in new environments

The Sensory Modulation Theory suggests that the attractiveness of a plants taste/smell changes dependent on the animals health. The theory suggests that animals have innate signalling pathways which link health problems with taste and smell pathways. Therefore the animal does not acquire this ability, the body naturally signals which plants will be therapeutic dependent on the disease or health issue.

Safety is always my highest priority. Dogs are far more sensitive to scent than humans, so I work with carefully diluted, dog-safe materials and follow strict guidelines for offering them appropriately. Nothing is ever applied or diffused without your dog’s clear consent and engagement.
Alongside self-selection aromatherapy, I may weave in principles from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and tailored nutrition guidance. TCM looks at patterns of imbalance (such as excess heat, stagnation, or deficiency) and helps us understand your dog’s behaviour and physical symptoms more holistically.
Nutritional adjustments and energetically supportive herbs can complement the aromatherapy work, creating a well-rounded plan that supports:
Emotional balance
Gut health
Immune function
Skin and coat condition
Overall vitality
All recommendations are designed to support — not replace — veterinary care. If your dog has a medical condition, I work collaboratively and responsibly within my scope of practice.

Online sessions are designed to be calm, collaborative, and empowering for you as your dog’s guardian.
We begin with an in-depth initial consultation via video call, where we explore your dog’s history, behavioural patterns, emotional triggers, health background, and current diet. This allows me to create a personalised selection of dog-safe botanicals aligned with your dog’s individual needs.
Following the consultation, I carefully prepare and post a tailored aromatherapy package to you. This may include diluted essential oils, hydrosols, or dried herbs, along with clear written guidance.
During our guided online session, I coach you step-by-step in how to safely and confidently offer each item to your dog using the principles of self-selection. You will learn how to:
Present each botanical without pressure
Recognise consent signals and disengagement
Observe subtle behavioural cues (such as shifts in posture, breathing, yawning, blinking, or moving closer/away)
Understand when your dog has had enough
Many guardians find that this process not only supports their dog’s emotional regulation, but also strengthens trust and connection between them.
Follow-up support is included, so you feel confident continuing the work gently and safely between sessions.
